Woodcarving Classes - Tuesdays 1 PM to 5 PM & Thursday 6 PM to 9 PM
With all the extra room the Willa Helwig History Center has given us, we have been able to take some of the museum's acquisitions and place them into themed exhibits. We started with some of the old Monona and local country school items and moved them into a little "clasroom" in the new building.

The "Old School" contains numerous textbooks from the the 1870's through the 1920's. There is an almost complete set of McGuffey's Readers from 1910 in pristine condition, old desks from a long-gone country school, a Monona High letter sweater from 1927, several trophies from the early 20th century and much, much more. We would like to have a couple of rows of the desks you see here. If you have any of these tucked away in the attic, garage or barn and would like to donate them to our "old school", we'd love to have them for display! Just call us -

One of our favorite pieces in the history center is the first telephone switchboard used in Monona. On the day of the Willa Helwig History Center's grand opening, we were fortunate to have with us three of the switchboard's original operators - - and did they have some stories to tell!

The phone booth used for long distance calls (you couldn't make long distance calls from home when the system was first installed) is also in the history center.

This was way before the days of "911". When the police were needed, the operator would turn on a red light in the window. When the policeman came by and saw the light, he would go up and find out where he was needed.

Rocks and minerals from around the US. Collected by Willa Helwig and her sister Marian Beimfohr on their travels.

The collection was donated shortly before the grand opening of the History Center. We were delighted to have it available and on display on that first day.
